  • Glass Artist Mònica García-Alonso

    Mònica García-Alonso

Fosambart is my fused glass studio. The name comes from "Fos" which in Catalan means "fused" and "amb art" which means "with art". My work is inspired by nature. My background is in zoology and I have always been fascinated by the diversity of colours, textures and shapes of the insect world.

There is nothing I enjoy more than walking in the countryside, taking pictures of landscapes and wildlife. From Catalan heritage, I grew up in Tarragona, by the sea and my grandmother was from Menorca, where I used to spend my childhood holidays. A lot of my pieces take inspiration from all this.

I hope you like my pieces.

    ★★★★★ Arabian Sunset

Really beautiful pendant. The pendents are really well made and look exactly as on the site, the colours are just as vivid. They come in a lovely box if you want to give as a gift.

    ★★★★★ Galaxy Fused Glass Pendant

Gorgeous pendant - can’t wait to give it to my friend for her birthday. Really good service and arrived very quickly.

    ★★★★★ Moss Bowl (Commission)

Monica has created this stunning eye catching coral bowl. From the brief through design to delivery, I received great communication. Thank-you I am absolutely thrilled with the result and often show it off!

  • My Latest Works

I am a biologist by training, so glass fusing is quite different, although I am always amazed at how useful a scientific training is when trying to work with glass. The physics of glass can be testing and many reactions occur when you combine colours. Also, some of my favourite designs have been inspired by nature.Over the years I have had the privilege to learn from some real masters in glass, and I have been developing my own techniques to find my personal style. I love making jewellery, trying to produce unique pieces that costumers can treasure. Recently, I have started working with fine silver, so I can make the silver bails for my pendants.

  • I also love sculpting glass, building three dimensional pieces that have an organic feel. I have been building a collection of insect inspired pieces. My pieces do not necessarily aim at representing insects in detail, but they capture what for me is the essence of a particular species. Therefore, the pieces are often abstract, but an entomologist should be able to guess the name of the species or group of insects that is represented.

My pieces are made with different forms of glass (sheet, powder and frits), some are fused several times to achieve depth and texture, others use 3-D printing and casting techniques. Lately I have been making nudibranchs (sea slugs). When I used to dive in the mediterranean, I used to love finding these small and graceful creatures. The glass sea slugs require manipulation of the glass at high temperature to achieve three dimensional shapes, an exciting and rewarding technique.

The price of my pieces vary depending on size, materials, numbers of firings and complexity.

    Fluid Glass Bowl

This client wanted a piece to reflect, but not just copy, some existing pieces in their collection. I took inspiration from their favourite elements and from the decoration and furniture in the room. This fluid bowl with textured finish, multiple firings and gold tracings took 5 weeks from concept to completion.
